This one-day course provides a structured, practical introduction to Power BI for anyone working with large and complex data sets. 
The focus is on understanding the full Power BI workflow, building clean data models, and creating clear, reliable reports using best practice approaches.

Prerequisites: Confident working with data in Excel or other BI tools

1. Power BI Overview & Workflow
•    What Power BI is and where it fits within an analytics environment
•    Power BI Desktop vs Power BI Service (overview)
•    Typical end-to-end workflow: data → model → report
2. Data Acquisition & Power Query Essentials
•    Connecting to common data sources (Excel, CSV, folders)
•    Introduction to Power Query
•    Core data preparation techniques:
Removing and filtering rows
Changing data types
Splitting and merging columns
•    Building refreshable, repeatable queries
3. Data Modelling Fundamentals
•    Understanding tables, relationships and cardinality
•    Introduction to star schema concepts
•    Managing relationships effectively
•    Measures vs calculated columns (conceptual understanding)


4. Building Reports & Visuals
•    Core visual types and when to use them
•    Filters, slicers and interactions
•    Designing clear, readable reports
•    Applying consistent formatting standards
5. Introduction to DAX (Foundations)
•    What DAX is and why it matters
•    Creating basic measures using:
SUM
COUNT
AVERAGE
•    Understanding filter context at a high level
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day, delegates will: - Understand the Power BI workflow from data import to report - Prepare and clean data using Power Query - Build simple, effective data models - Create clear and interactive reports - Know the next steps for further development
Scope Note
This course focuses on Power BI and Power Query fundamentals. Microsoft Fabric concepts may be discussed at a high level if helpful, but Fabric workloads, architecture and implementation are outside the scope of this one-day programme.
